Stingers ride late rally past Waterloo

West Central Tribune, Willmar, Minn.

July 14--WATERLOO, Iowa. -- Jack Ross singled in the go-ahead runs, and the Willmar Stingers hung four runs on the Waterloo Bucks in the top of the ninth to win 9-5 on Sunday at Riverfront Stadium.

Ross came to bat in a bases-loaded, no-out situation in a 5-5 game against Waterloo's Adam Dian, and as he has done so many times this season already, came up with a big base hit to drive in two.

The Pepperdine freshman already has 18 RBIs on the season, second on the team, despite not debuting until July 2.

Two batters later, Tyler Cohen added two more insurance runs with a two-run single off Dian.

The Stingers scattered 15 hits, including three from Reagan Fowler and two from Ross, Cohen, Casey Hughston and Sean Beesley.

Will Lydon pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick up the win for the Stingers.

Willmar also scored two runs in the first on two hits, an error and a hit batter, and two in the third on a Cohen sac fly and Beesley RBI single.

Brantley Claunch tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Willmar starter Garrett Anderson, who pitched the first four frames and gave up all five of Waterloo's runs.

The Stingers improved to 7-5 in the Northwoods League North Division second half and are tied for third place with Mankato.

They play 7:05 p.m. today against the St. Cloud Rox at Bill Taunton Stadium, a makeup game from a June rainout.

Willmar 5, Waterloo 3

Brett Barbier drove in the go-ahead run with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly and T.J. Whidby tossed seven strong innings in the Stingers' 5-3 win over Waterloo on Saturday at Riverfront Stadium.

Nick Rivera had three hits and Jack Ross two, and Barbier had two RBIs, also driving in a run with a fourth-inning double.
