Steuben County Administrator Sworn in as County Association President

Targeted News Service

ALBANY, N.Y., Sept. 27 -- The New York State Association of Counties issued the following news release:

County delegates from across the state elected Steuben County Administrator Mark Alger to serve as president of the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) during their annual meeting today.

Hundreds of county officials from across the state are in Saratoga County this week for the NYSAC Fall Seminar. Attendees are discussing ways to balance their 2013 budgets, putting forth a series of resolutions stating their positions on key issues to the State Legislature and Governor, sharing innovative cost-saving solutions, and attending workshops on key issues such as energy, Medicaid, health insurance, shared services, unfunded mandates, public health, public safety, and economic development.

"In his time on the NYSAC Board of Directors, Mark Alger has shared his experience and insight on the issues impacting our counties. We are pleased our members have elected him to serve as the next president of NYSAC," said NYSAC Immediate Past-President and Orange County Executive Ed Diana.

"It is an honor to be elected president of the New York State Association of Counties," said County Administrator Alger. "County officials are facing many challenges across the state as we work to provide vital programs and services to our constituents. In my new role as NYSAC President, I will continue to work hard on behalf of the citizens of Steuben County and all of our counties across New York State."

Alger is a native of Hornell, NY, and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from the State University of New York at Geneseo and a Master of Arts in Geography from Western Illinois University. Alger's county government career began in Steuben County as a Senior Planner. He was appointed County Planning Director in 1981. In 1984, the county reapportioned and went from a 34-member Board of Supervisors to a 17-member County Legislature with an appointed County Administrator. Alger was appointed the first Steuben County Administrator in September 1984.

In December 1995, Alger was offered the position of Deputy Commissioner for Administration with the NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets in Albany, a position he held for three years. He returned to Steuben County to serve as the County's Social Services Commissioner in 1999. In the fall of 2000, Alger was again appointed County Administrator, following the resignation of the previous County Administrator.

"Mark's unique and extensive experience have been an asset to the NYSAC Board of Directors, and will continue to serve our member counties as he leads the association in the role of President," said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen Acquario.
