Affordable hearing aids critical to well-being of millions

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- An award-winning physician and professor has launched MDHearingAid®, www.MDHearingAid.com, a company that provides affordable, high-quality hearing aids for people with mild to moderately-severe hearing loss.

As an attending physician in Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat Surgery) in Munster, IN., Sreekant Cherukuri, MD, says he saw too many patients with hearing loss going home without a solution. After evaluating several hearing devices and sound amplifiers in the under-$200 range, he found that most failed to work well on amplifying the human voice clearly.

“I also evaluated hundreds of patients who wanted to hear better but could not afford expensive, customized hearing aids,” Dr. Cherukuri explains. “I developed the MDHearingAid line because I know through my research that patients can get a significant improvement with a far less expensive device,” he said. “I feel for them because hearing impairment is a huge quality of life issue.”

Hearing loss affects approximately 36-million Americans. Untreated, it can lead to depression, anxiety, paranoia and isolation, according to The National Council on Aging. Yet, 28-million Americans who need hearing assistance do not wear hearing aids. Half say cost is an obstacle.

Dr. Cherukuri, also a volunteer clinical assistant professor at Indiana University School of Medicine, says he is aghast that even after the healthcare reform package, hearing aids are not covered by most insurance policies or Medicare.

“It is so unfair that if you can’t pay out of pocket, you simply don’t get help,” he says. “Insurance usually pays for a wheelchair and often up to $100,000 for a cochlear implant but won’t pay for a hearing aid? It’s just not right. Too many people are in need.”

The good news: an MDHearingAid (model MDHearingAid PRO®) costs under $200, while customized hearing aids can cost as much as $1,500 - $3,000 per ear.

"I have thoroughly evaluated the MDHearingAid PRO® and can comfortably say this is an excellent option for those that cannot afford custom hearing aids,” said Seilesh Babu, M.D., board-certified otologist and nationally recognized authority on hearing loss.

The MDHearingAid PRO® is the top rated hearing aid online with thousands of satisfied users. It is ideal for people with mild to moderately-severe hearing loss who need to hear in a variety of settings from business meetings to social events. A pair of MDHearingAids costs $329.99, shipping included.

Dr. Cherukuri urges consumers to see a physician (preferably an Otolaryngologist) prior to purchasing a hearing aid, and to get the best hearing aid they can afford. Dr. Cherurkuri stresses that the MDHearingAid is a solution for those who either can’t afford a custom device or do not want to pay the high price tag.
