PREP ROUNDUP | Holmen golf shoots 296 to win regional

La Crosse Tribune, Wis.
By La Crosse Tribune, Wis.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

May 28--Onalaska High junior Bennett Hutson was on, and so was everyone playing for Holmen in a WIAA Division 1 boys golf regional at Forest Hills Golf Club on Tuesday.

Hutson bogeyed just one hole and carded a 3-under-par 68 to beat everyone, and the Vikings used some consistency for a team score of 296 to win the team competition and advance to the Baraboo sectional next week.

Junior Tyler Church shot a 1-under 70 to tie Tomah's Matt Stees for second place and lead Holmen, which beat the second-place Hilltoppers by five shots and also received a 73 from Drew Schroeder, a 74 from Connor Frawley and a 79 from Eric Olson.

Church had five birdies and four bogeys during his round and shot a 1-under 34 on the front nine.

Hutson only bogeyed the par 1st and had four birdies in his round. He beat par on Nos. 6, 13, 17 and 18 and played the three par-5s and 2-under while shooting a 3-under 33 on the back nine.

Tomah also qualified for the sectional with a third-place finish (308), and Central sophomore Sam Grode tied for 13th with a 79 and qualified individually.

Holmen 4, Tomah 0

TOMAH -- The top-ranked Vikings scored two early runs and two late runs to complete an unbeaten MVC season.

Pitcher Thomas Sanchez struck out four and walked one in keeping the Timberwolves (8-10, 4-8) hitless until rain wiped out the rest of the game.

The Vikings (20-0, 12-0) received doubles from Jeren Kendall and Greg Rooney.

Coulee

G-E-T 5, West Salem 4

WEST SALEM -- Dexter Haines tripled home three runs, and Scott Foster followed with the winning single in the top of the seventh inning for the Red Hawks, who scored all of their runs in the final two innings.

Nonconference

Onalaska 4, Onalaska Luther 1

ONALASKA -- Aaron Stauffer relieved Kyle Sheehan in the fourth inning with the game tied at 1 and pitched three scoreless innings for the Hilltoppers (14-10). After Onalaska broke the tie with a run in the fourth, senior Ben Reimler provided a little insurance with an RBI double in the sixth inning. Mike Pamperin went 2-for-4 for the Knights (9-10).

Logan's No. 1 singles player -- Sam Deetz (14-7) -- and No. 2 doubles team -- Jordan Dittmer and Danny Bonifas (11-10) also advanced, while Central's Brendan Londergan (7-1) squeaked through at No. 1 singles.

GIRLS SOCCER

Aquinas 3, Onalaska 0

ONALASKA -- The Blugolds, ranked fourth in Division 4, moved to within one win of an undefeated conference season and won their fifth straight game by taking care of the Hilltoppers.

Senior Maddi Wettstein put the finishing touch on the Blugolds' 14th shutout with a goal in the 55th minute.

Aquinas hosts West Salem (11-3-1) on Thursday at Fields for Kids.
