Oxnard campaign finance reports show money rolling in to races

Oct. 09--OXNARD, Calif. -- The latest campaign finance reports show some Oxnard candidates racking up sizable war chests before the Nov. 4 election.

The reports cover contributions made between July 1 and Sept. 30. In addition, candidates must report contributions of $1,000 or more within 24 hours. Oxnard has no campaign contribution limits in local elections.

The next reports are due Oct. 23.

Council race

Aaron Starr, the controller for Oxnard-based manufacturer Haas Automation Inc., reported taking in $44,994 in cash contributions between July 1 through Sept. 30. Since January, that total was more than $85,000 as of the end of September. He ended the reporting period with $63,450 in cash and debts totaling $12,750.

Contributions of $1,000 or more from July 1-Sept. 30: $1,000 from attorney Christopher Matarese of La Cañada; $1,000 from Global Holdings chief executive Sam Solakyan of Sherman Oaks; $3,000 from Woodland agriculturist Chris Rufer of Morning Star Co.; $1,000 from Laguna Woods investor Mike Binkley; $5,000 from Orion Business Insurance and Risk Management Services Inc. of Corona; $1,000 from Aspen Helicopters Inc. pilot Charles McLaughlin of Oxnard; $1,000 from Simi Valley engineer Daniel Wiener; $25,000 from Aaron Starr.

Since Oct. 1, Starr reported two additional contributions of $1,000 or more: $7,000 from Gene Haas, president of Oxnard's Haas Automation; and $1,000 from the McGaelic Group in Ventura.

Steve Huber, a retired Navy captain and city planning commissioner, reported total contributions of $33,017 for the period. Of that, $8,570 was nonmonetary. For the first nine months of the year, Huber reported total contributions of $44,284. He ended the period with $11,564 in cash and $5,000 of debt.

Contributions of $1,000 or more from July 1-Sept 30: $1,000 from MESG Land Co. LLC of Corona del Mar; $1,000 from Bob Jones Ranch and Brian Fukatami of Oxnard; $3,000 from the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee; $1,000 from Oxnard Firefighters Local 1684 PAC; $2,500 from Channel Islands Warehouse Inc. of Oxnard; $1,000 from California Grape Co. LLC of Bakersfield; $1,000 from E.R.E. Sheep Co. of Bakersfield; $2,000 from Team Nissan of Oxnard; $2,500 from the District Council of Iron Workers in Pinole. A nonmonetary contribution worth $7,278 for consultants, door hangers and precinct research came from the Committee for a Safe and Prosperous Oxnard Supporting MacDonald for Mayor and Huber for City Council 2014.

Since Oct. 1, Huber reported two contributions of $1,000 or more: $1,000 from the McGaelic Group in Ventura and $1,000 from Aspen Helicopters pilot Charles McGlaughlin of Oxnard.

Council member Carmen Ramirez, an attorney, reported $24,318 in cash contributions for the period. Year-to-date totals were not immediately available Wednesday. She ended the period with $19,538 in cash and $10,227 in debt.

Contributions of $1,000</money> or more from July 1-Sept. 30: $1,000 from Santa Barbara attorney Janet McGinnis; $1,000 from Oxnard Firefighters PAC; $2,000 from Ventura County Women's Political Council; $1,000 from Oxnard real estate professional Henry Casillas.

Council member Bert Perello, a mail carrier, reported total contributions of $15,900 for the most recent period. Of that, $10,000 was in loans and $1,000 was nonmonetary. Year-to-date figures were reported as identical. He ended with $4,811 in cash and $835 in debt.

Contributions of $1,000 or more from July 1-Sept. 30: $2,500 from Oxnard attorney Fred Rosenmund; use of Rosenmund's conference room valued at $1,000; a $10,000 loan from Perello to his campaign. Since Oct. 1, Perello has reported making an additional $5,000 loan to his campaign.

Dick Jaquez, a retired educator and former Oxnard Union High School District board member, reported $4,318 in contributions for the period, with identical year-to-date figures. He ended with $1,009 in cash and no debt. Jaquez reported one contribution of $1,000 from Jaime and Angie Jaquez of Gold Coast Medical Supply in Camarillo.

Linda Lindemann, a retiree and self-employed businesswoman, reported only a $1,000 loan from herself through Sept. 30, and ended the period with outstanding debt of $2,275. Since Oct. 1, Lindemann reported making a $1,435 cash contribution to her campaign.

Candidate Oscar Madrigal, a high school teacher, plans to take in and spend less than $1,000 during the campaign.

Mayoral race

Councilman Bryan MacDonald, a retired assistant police chief, reported total contributions of $36,993 during the July 1-Sept. 30 period. Of that, $8,853 was nonmonetary donations. Since January, total contributions were $43,307. He ended the period with $20,975 cash and no debt.

Contributions of $1,000 or more from July 1-Sept. 30: $1,000 from SA Recycling in Oxnard; $1,000 from E and H Land Co. in Corona del Mar; $5,000 from the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce PAC; $1,000 from E.R.E. Sheep Co. in Bakersfield; $1,000 from California Grape Co. in Bakersfield; $2,000 from Executive Team Nissan LLC in Oxnard; $2,500 from the District Council of Ironworkers in Pinole. Nonmonetary contributions of consultants, door hangers and precinct research worth $7,278 came from the Committee for a Safe and Prosperous Oxnard Supporting MacDonald/Huber.

Mayor Tim Flynn, a high school teacher, reported total contributions of $28,527 for the period. Of that, $1,500 was in loans and $1,854 was nonmonetary. Year-to-date figures were unclear. He ended the period with $9,178 cash and no debt.

Contributions of $1,000 or more from July 1-Sept. 30: $1,800 from retirees John and Diane Flynn of Oxnard; $2,500 from Oxnard attorney Fred Rosenmund; $1,000 from Oxnard retirees Hisako Owen and Charles Wilson. Flynn loaned his campaign $1,500 during the period. Oxnard retiree Gail Leamy provided $1,200 worth of storage and construction of signs.

Lawrence Paul "Larry" Stein, an accountant, plans to take in and spend less than $1,000 during the campaign.
