OHS girls clinch division title

The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y.
By The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y.
McClatchy-Tribune Information Services

Oct. 14--Taryn More had two goals and two assists as Oneonta High clinched its fourth straight Southern Tier Athletic Conference East Division title with a 5-0 girls soccer victory Monday over Chenango Forks at the Wright National Soccer Campus.

Abby Picinich contributed a goal and an assist for the Yellowjackets (10-3, 10-1), who will attempt to win their fourth straight STAC championship.

OHS will play at West Division champion Elmira or Metro Division champion Vestal on Friday in a STAC semifinal. The championship game is Monday at the school with the lowest enrollment.

"We feel a good spark heading into the STAC playoffs," said OHS coach Jerry Mackey, whose team won the Class B state championship last season. "We've been trying to fight the doldrums of the season and make sure we're taking each and every step along the way. Now we're getting closer to the games that if you don't play well, you can lose and we've been gearing up for that."

When OHS and Forks met earlier this season, the Blue Devils tied the score in the second half before the Yellowjackets scored two late goals to pull away.

This time, the Yellowjackets had a 17-5 advantage in shots and led, 5-0, with 32 minutes left.

More scored on a re-start from 22 yards 6 1/2 minutes into play. Her shot went over the wall and skimmed the bottom of the crossbar.

"It was a great strike," Mackey said.

About five minutes later, Picinich penetrated into the penalty box before sending a pass out to Nicole Harmer, who sent a 25-yard shot over the goalie to make it 2-0.

One minute into the second half, Taylor Hitchcock was tripped in the box, setting up a penalty kick that More finished. Two minutes later, More set up a goal by Hitchcock and then Picinich scored off an assist from More five minutes later.

"I think that third goal took the wind out of their sails," Mackey said. "We continued to push and push and got scores when we had opportunities."

The Yellowjackets will host Windsor at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lloyd Baker Field.

Franklin 6, Edmeston 0

Terry Peterson scored her season high of three goals in leading Tri-Valley League West Division champion Franklin to a victory at home.

Franklin improved to 13-1-1 overall and 12-1 in the league, one season after losing standouts Jordan Beers and Marisa Cawley to graduation.

"Honestly, I thought we'd be good," Franklin coach J.J. Laing said. "I'm thrilled with how well we've come together as the year has gone on. We've had goals from multiple sources and this group has shared the ball quite well."

Jess Downin opened the scoring 4:48 into play. She scored on a direct kick from 20 yards on the left side of the field. Peterson made it 2-0 when she volleyed in a corner kick by Downin with 7:42 left in the half.

Downin finished with a goal and two assists, and Mariah McNeilly and Paige Fairchilds also scored for the Purple Devils, who will play East Division winner Milford in the crossover final at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Campus. Milford beat Franklin, 3-2, during the season.

"I anticipate a very good game if both teams play to their capabilities," Laing said.

G-MU 2, Morris 1

Tayler Nichols scored two second-half goals, the latter coming with 1:54 to go, as host Gilbertsville-Mount Upton won in the Tri-Valley League.

Both of Nichols' goals came on breakaways. Her winner came after she won a ball midfield, dribbled through several defenders before scoring to the far post from just inside the penalty box.

Nichols tied the score with 12:12 left in regulation.

Morris scored on an own goal in the first half.

G-MU finishes its season at 5-10.

Omissions: Hannah Saggese and Emilie Mertz had two assists apiece during Milford's 4-3 non-league girls soccer victory Wednesday at South Kortright. The assists for each player were incorrect in Thursday's edition of The Daily Star because the home team did not report all of them.

BOYS SOCCERMorris 3, G-MU 0

Junior Mike Murphy scored two goals as Morris won a Tri-Valley League game at home.

Murphy is the area's leading scorer.

"He's matured from last year, to say the least," Morris coach Dave Sander said. "Last year, he was always trying to finish with power. This year, when he gets around the goal, he's finishing with finesse over power."

Matt Madero scored first for the Mustangs. He ran onto a corner kick by Ryan Morlock at the far post and deflected it into the goal with his shoulder. That came with 12:13 left in the first half.

With 4:21 gone in the second half, Murphy beat two defenders along the left wing before scoring to the near post. His second goal was nearly a carbon copy.

Morris (12-3) is 10-3 in league play and still has an outside chance at tying Edmeston atop the West Division standings.

On Friday, Murphy and Madero scored second-half goals as Morris beat host Franklin, 2-1.

Unatego 4, Sidney 2

Josh Treffeisen scored his first varsity goal 15 minutes into the second half to give host Unatego a 3-2 lead en route to a Midstate Athletic Conference victory.

Treffeisen stole the ball from a defender before scoring from just inside the 18-yard box.

Austin Ryan scored an insurance goal for the Spartans with 2 1/2 minutes left.

Cody Manzanero finished a throughball from Liam Alvin 2 1/2 minutes into play to give Unatego a 1-0 lead.

Sidney answered on goals by Kyle McMillan and Justin Charles, both of which were set up by Ryan Arnold.

Arnold's cross set up McMillan's 5 1/2 minutes into play. Charles scored two minutes later as the Warriors took a 2-1 lead.

Unatego tied the score five minutes into the second half when Alvin scored off a throughball from Manzanero.

The Spartans (6-7, 6-9) honored seniors Alvin, Ryan, Manzanero, Matt Leichty, Vincent Lippincott, Jeremy Johnson, Nate Rutherford and Tom Philipson before the game.

Sidney (6-7-1) and Unatego will play in MAC crossover games Wednesday. The matchups have not been finalized.

Laurens 3, G-MU 0

Jerry Soucia had a goal and two assists as host Laurens won in the Tri-Valley League on Saturday.

Soucia scored with 8:50 left in the first half to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead. He followed a 30-yard shot by Mitchel Barra that hit the crossbar and scored from 6 yards on the rebound.

Soucia then used his heel to send a pass to Mason Weir, who scored from inside the box to make it 2-0 in the second half. J.D. Carrigan capped the scoring.

"It's a nice way to end the season," said Laurens coach Dave Miller, whose team finished 5-9 overall and 5-8 in the Tri-Valley League.

VOLLEYBALLHarpursville 3, Afton 0

Amanda Greenwood had three kills and two blocks, but host Afton lost, 25-15, 25-6, 25-15, in a Midstate Athletic Conference match Saturday.

Madison Paugh had 10 kills and eight aces to lead Harpursville.

Afton (4-9) will travel to Walton on Wednesday.
