New AARP Analysis Finds Asian Women Most Targeted Group for Age Discrimination in NYC

PR Newswire Association LLC

NEW YORK, May 29, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month draws to a close, the issue of discrimination against the group is alive and well in New York City, according to a new analysis on age discrimination by AARP.

Released today, the analysis finds that Asians report the highest percentage (37%) out of several major ethnicities (Black, Hispanic & White) in NYC when it comes to their, a family member or a friend not being hired for a job since hitting 50. For Asian women the issue is a particular problem, with the group citing age as an issue 43% of the time - a rate 13% higher than their male counterparts and 17% higher than the general 50+ population in the city.

Do you believe you, a family member or a friend have ever not been hired for a job because of age since turning 50? (% yes)

Asian: 37%
Hispanic: 27%
White: 25%
Black: 24%

Do you believe you, a family member or a friend have ever not been hired for a job because of age since turning 50? (% yes)

Total Asian: 37%
Asian Men: 30%
Asian Women: 43%

The Association says the clear disparity is something that warrants greater attention and is looking forward to working with city lawmakers on the matter.

The AARP analysis is based on a survey of 50+ voters in NYC, broken down by multicultural respondents and gender.
