Neher urges people to use insurance options resources

April 30--Senior citizens and middle-age residents should take advantage of local services that could provide better access to health insurance coverage and health care, says Darryl Neher, Democratic candidate for Bloomington mayor.

The new federal health insurance marketplace and the Healthy Indiana Plan offer affordable coverage for residents up to age 64; after that, people are covered by the Medicare program.

Though they don't replace employer insurance, Neher said in a news release, the programs fill gaps for residents who do not receive insurance through other means.

"We need more help for seniors and middle-aged residents in navigating these new healthcare options," Neher said. "The security that comes from having health coverage is more than peace of mind when you reach middle age, it is an economic and practical necessity."

Bloomington is blessed with several organizations that help people as they transition into retirement or out of employment, Neher said. The Cover Monroe Project of the ACA Volunteers of Monroe County, a local not-for-profit, helps people younger than 65 understand their options and sign up for health insurance. Area 10 Agency on Aging, another local nonprofit, helps seniors with many issues they face, including navigating the Medicare system.

And the city of Bloomington's Community and Family Resources Division helps residents with these issues, too.

During his time on city council, Neher supported the resolution supporting the expansion of Medicaid for the Affordable Care Act.

"Health coverage assistance and the financial security it provides deserves public support."
