My Pet Is Such a Klutz! Petplan Pet Insurance Reveals the Most Accident Prone Breeds in the United States

In a review of claims data, Petplan has found that there are certain breeds that find their way into predicaments that require emergency veterinary care more frequently than others, and it reminds pet parents of the considerable expense that can come from the unexpected medical needs of a klutzy pet.

“Every week we reimburse pet parents thousands of dollars for conditions caused by their pet’s natural rambunctious and curious nature,” says Dr. Jules Benson, Vice President of Veterinary Services at Petplan. “In fact, one pet parent in California has been reimbursed nearly $20,000 after multiple surgical repairs of the knees of her two pit bulls – something we commonly see in high energy dogs that love to play. And we don’t just see claims for “common or garden variety” injuries here at Petplan – we recently reimbursed a Michigan pet parent $8,000 when her golden retriever required heart surgery after being impaled by a stick while on a weekend hike. Thankfully all of these pets have recovered well, but they serve as a timely reminder that accidents can cause serious damage to our wallets as well as our pets.”
Based upon Petplan’s claims data examining the number of claims paid for accidents versus the total number of claims paid, the following breeds rank as the most accident prone in the nation: American Staffordshire Terriers, American Bulldogs, Wheaten Terriers, Border Collies and American Pit Bull Terriers. Lhasa Apsos are the least accident prone and, based on this data, an American Staffordshire Terrier is more than six times as likely to have to visit the vet for an accident over a Lhasa Apso.

“While it appears that some breeds may be over-represented in pure ‘klutzy-ness,’ it’s important to realize that, by definition, any breed can have an accident,” says Benson. “Pet parents can help to soften the blow of these incidents by considering pet health insurance as a way to provide the best possible care for your pet without worrying about the financial woes your accident-prone pet might spring on you.”
