The Johnson County Commissioners Court plans to vote on adopting the proposed tax rate and budget for the county's upcoming fiscal year during its Monday meeting.
The county's new fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
Commissioners will meet at 9 a.m. in Room 201 of the Johnson County Courthouse, 2 N. Main St. in Cleburne.
The proposed tax rate — 41.7 cents per $100 of property valuation — represents an increase over the current rate of 38.9 cents per $100.
The increase is necessary because of inflation and current economic conditions, County Judge Chris Boedeker said.
“Other banner items that led to the [increase proposal] came about because our health insurance coverage costs are going to increase by about $2 million per year,” he said. “We’re also anticipating decreases in our jail lease revenue numbers of about $3 million in the coming year.”
Historically, the county has gained revenue by leasing jail space for inmates from other counties. Lately, however, Johnson County inmate numbers have increased.
“The more of our people we have in there, the less space we have to lease out to other counties,” Boedeker said.
Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the proposed tax rate before their vote.
Commissioners also intend to proclaim POW/MIA Recognition Day and Johnson County Constitution Week during the meeting.
Also on Monday's agenda is a request for a No Thru Trucks sign on Forgotten Lane from Farm-to-Market Road 917 to Highridge Drive in Precinct 3.
Another request calls for the installation of a stop sign at Bethesda Road East at Winnett Road, also in Precinct 3.
