Country Financial leader, role model plans to retire [The Pantagraph, Bloomington, Ill.]

May 30--BLOOMINGTON -- Country Financial's Jean Bollero Lawyer is an example of the strides women have made in the workforce.

Lawyer began her career at the Bloomington-based insurer in the mid-1970s. Lawyer began in a professional position, writing training material in a then-male-dominated industry, she said.

Back then women mostly filled secretarial positions, Lawyer said. Now as director of corporate relations and inclusion, the Heyworth resident is soon to retire after more than 35 years of service.

Lawyer, who oversees public affairs, media relations, diversity and organizational development for Country Financial, said she is pleased with the changes.

"I felt that probably from the first days in the company (I was) a role model for other women," said Lawyer. "The gratifying part now is that the communications field is highly populated with women."

Those who have worked closely with Lawyer said she's among the company's stronger leaders. And Lawyer's ability to communicate effectively has helped shaped Country Financial's growth.

"That's her legacy: She can write a speech and she can give a speech," said Steve Denault, executive vice president of corporate services for Country. "She's respected by her peers as well as her employees."

In the Twin Cities, Lawyer is known for her volunteer involvement with several efforts.

Lawyer has served on the boards of BroMenn Physicians Management Group, United Way of McLean County, Heartland Community College Foundation and Illinois Prairie Community Foundation. She also has led the board of directors for The Baby Fold and has volunteered with the American Red Cross of the Heartland's Evening of Stars event.

Lawyer said she plans to spend more down time with her husband, Dennis, two sons, Drew and Wyatt, and two grandchildren.
