College Report 09/29/14

Sept. 29--The Illinois State soccer team began defense of its Missouri Valley Conference crown with a 2-0 blanking of Missouri State in the conference opener for both teams on Sunday at Adelaide Street Field in Normal.

Rachel Tejada netted both goals for the Redbirds (7-4, 1-0), her first breaking the ice in the 22nd minute off an in-stride feed from Gabbi McArtor. Tejada, who scored for the fifth straight match, added an insurance marker just three minutes later on an assist from Dagny Olson. The senior now has nine goals on the season.

ISU outshot Missouri State by a 24-5 margin with 16 of the attempts on net. 'Birds goalkeeper Aryn Newsome made two saves to record her fourth shutout of the season while MSU netminder was stellar with 14 saves in the loss.

Next up for the Redbirds is Wenesday contest at Milwuakee with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Men's golf tenth: The Illinois State men's golf team posted a first round score of 306 and is tied for 10th place after Sunday's first round of the 13-team Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis.

Jordan Fahel shot a 2-over-par 74 and is tied for 21st while Josh Edison's 76 puts him in a tie for 39th.

Sam Houston State leads the team competition at 5-under-par 283 while Marquette's Patrick Sanchez tops the individual leaderboard at 4-under-par 68.

The tournament continues Monday.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN

Men's golf extends lead: The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team has opened a seven-shot lead after 36 holes of 19-team Gustavus Twin Cities Classic at Elk River, Minn. The Titans carded a second-round score of 292 for a two-day total of 585 to lead St. Thomas (593) and Manitoba (594) heading into Monday's final round.

Tony Albano and Tim Tynan are both at even-par 144, good for a share of fourth place. IWU's Spencer Groessl, competing as an individual, sits in a three-way tie atop the medal leaderboard with Manitoba's Scott Mazur and St. Thomas JV's Michael Klampe at 1-under-par 73.
