BRIEF: Group opposed to flood-control gate to hold meeting Thursday

April 30--A group opposed to the construction of a flood-control gate at the mouth of Smith Canal will hold a public meeting Thursday night to share its concerns.

The group, which has a website at savedadspoint.org, has not identified its membership, but says on the website that it is "concerned with the health, management and conservation of Dad's Point, Atherton Cove and Smith Canal."

It has started an online petition opposing the gate, which is intended to relieve thousands of homeowners in the area from the burden of mandatory flood insurance.

The group says it has an alternative proposal which will be presented at the meeting, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Stockton Rod & Gun Club, 3120 Monte Diablo Avenue.
