Area Roundup: Knights’ softball team clinches first place in conference

April 07--The Shasta College softball team clinched first place in the Golden Valley Conference with its Saturday sweep of Butte College at home.

The Knights won the first game of the doubleheader 8-0 in five innings and edged the Roadrunners 2-1 in game two. Shasta'sMegan McColpin got both game victories.

The highlight of game one came in the first inning when Shasta'sCheyenne King, a Modoc High School product, made a spectacular catch at the outfield fence to save three runs, coach Sonny Stupek said. The catch emptied Shasta's dugout as the players raced to centerfield to congratulate King.

McColpin gave up two hits and struck out five. Laura Wells was 2 for 2 with an RBI and Jamie Weatherbee was 2 for 2 with two runs and an RBI.

McColpin gave up three hits and struck out seven in the nightcap, while going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Megan McCadden, who was 2 for 3, got an RBI in the fifth when she drove in the second run.

Shasta (16-0 GVC, 24-7) goes to College of the Siskiyous for a Saturday doubleheader.

JC BASEBALL

The Knights split a doubleheader at home Saturday.

Ross Cervantes took the loss in game one. Tucker Wilson was 3 for 5, Zack Trueblood was 2 for 5 with an RBI and Daniel Mahutga was 1 for 2.

Tyler Figgs won on the mound in the nightcap, giving up four runs on six hits over six innings while striking out one and walking one. Jake Mekeel was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Jake Parent was 2 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, and Jordan Wade was 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Shasta hosts a doubleheader Wednesday against Siskiyous.

PREP TRACK AND FIELD

Enterprise boys, WV girls win meet

The Enterprise boys and West Valley girls teams had first-place finishes at the Hornet Invite.

The West Valley boys team took second while Chico finished third. On the girls side, Enterprise was second while Foothill was third.

In late results from Saturday:

BOYS

200M: Anthony Rodriguez of Enterprise (22.80).

4x400 relay: Enterprise (3:30.97).

High jump: Marley Broeks of West Valley (6-6.5).

1600M: Clayton Bunn of Yreka (4:20.02)

3200M: Bunn (9:35.63).

GIRLS

200M: Gina Nelson of Foothill (27.41).

3200M: Natalie Ulloa of Enterprise (11:09.55).

100M hurdles: Ashley Ensminger of Yreka (16.59).

4x400 relay: Alexa Flagg, Kristina Freitas, Jenna Storms, Jenna Hinkle of West Valley (4:10.16).

Long jump: Chantelle Borges of Enterprise (16-09.50).

For Anderson, the girls 4x100 team was fourth (53.82) with Melissa Frields, Kilee Hannan, Madisun Allen and Sierra Graves. Frields was also second in the 110M hurdles (16.84). Hannan was also third in triple jump (32-03.50). Chris Delaney was fifth in the long jump (19-9.50).

JC TRACK AND FIELD

Shasta men, women first at home meet

The Knights' men's and women's teams each finished first Friday at the Shasta Invitational en route to 42 personal records.

The Shasta women tallied 117 points, topping Siskiyous with 51, Feather River with 13, and Redwoods and Simpson each with six.

Shasta's men's team totaled 121 points, followed by Siskiyous' 65 and Simpson's 25.

On the women's side for Shasta, in the 100M, Hailey Jackson was second (13.18) and Autumn Serota was third (13.57). Jackson was also second in the 200 (16.13).

Savannah Kniep was third in the 400 (64.08). Shasta finish 1-2-3 in the 400 with Kniep (2:38.86), Sarah Bilich (2:40.42) and Sonia Pabloff (2:52.16). Pabloff was second in the 1500 (6:01.92).

Taking first in the 100M hurdles was Lauren Duval (17.59) and Serota in the 400 hurdles (76.78). Duval was first in the high jump (4-10) and third in the javelin (78-1).

Shasta took second in the 4x100 relay (51.98) with Serota, Kniep, Duvall and Jackson. The 4x400 relay team finished first (4:26.18) with Bilich, Kniep, Duvall and Jackson.

Taking first in pole vault was Ryan Fogel (6-6 3/4). Fogel was second in the long jump (11-10 1/2).

In shot put, Katie Brummett was first (38-5), Priscilla Masten was second (36-6 3/16) and Yessica Lopez was third (31-9 1/2).

In the hammer throw, Masten was first (139-3/8), followed by Lopez (123-7 7/16) and Morgan Mora in third (121-8 1/4).

In the discus, Lopez was first (119-3 1/2) with Brummett in second (116-4 7/8) and Masten in third (107-3 3/8).

On the men's side, in the 100-meter, Devan Sawyerr took first (11.09). Stephen Hackstaff was second in the 200-meter (23.69) and first in the 400-meter (53.01). Colby Hanna was second in the 800-meter (2:10.51).

Tony Meredith was first in the 5000-meter (16:34.99) while Tim Oxley was second (17:25.90). Finishing 1-2 in the 100M hurdles were Brandan Hester (16.89) and Cole Halverson (17.84). Halverson was first in the 400M hurdles (63.46).

The 4x100 relay team took second (43.23) with Marcial Lawson, Luke Wright, Elijah Brown and Sawyerr. The 4x400 team earned first (3:35.75) with Sawyerr, Hanna, Nicholas Mai and Davis Kepon.

Shasta took first through third in the discus with Eric Scribner (157-10 7/8), Jeff Williamson (135-2 3/16) and Jonathan Cook (129-2 13/16).

In the high jump, Kepon was first (6-2) while Halverson was second (6-0). Jacob Logan was first in the pole vault (13-11 516). The top three in shot put were Shasta'sJacob Barker (48-0), Scribner (47-11 9/16) and Cook (45-3/16). Scribner was first in the hammer (173-1 9/16) while Barker was second (143-4 7/8).

Shasta travels to Merritt College on Saturday for the Maurice Compton Invitational.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Menlo 5, Simpson 4

Menlo 12, Simpson 6

The Red Hawks dropped a doubleheader on the road Saturday.

Simpson had a 4-3 lead in the ninth, but Menlo scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to win it. Cameron Imhoff was the losing pitcher. Harold Adams, Ryan Lombardi and Aaron Curfman all went 2 for 4.

Simpson had a 6-5 lead in game two, but Menlo College scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to grab the lead for good. Andrew Hatfield</person> was the losing pitcher. The Red Hawks' Kurtice Huffman was 2 for 3, Luke Tessman was 2 for 5 and Dylan Mumford was 1 for 2.

On Friday, the Red Hawks lost a doubleheader to Menlo 7-0 and 12-2.

In game one, Menlo'sDaniel Chavez tossed his first career no-hitter in the win. The losing pitcher was Garrett Greenhaw.

Joshua Gilmore was the losing pitcher in the nightcap. Lombardi was 2 for 3.

Simpson (1-35) hosts Lewis-Clark State for a Saturday doubleheader.

WRESTLING

RAWC results from Foothill tournament

Here's the outcome for Redding Amateur Wrestling Club members Saturday at the Foothill Tourney.

In Bantam, Spencer Riego was second in Freestyle (45 lbs.). Brandon Molgaard was second in Greco (45s). Darrain Jensen was third in Freestyle and second in Greco (55s). Kingston Coates was first in Greco (65s). Connor Dillman was second in Greco (65s).

In Intermediate, Dominic Riego was third in Freestyle (55s). Dominic Sweeney was third in Freestyle (75s). Carter Oliver was third in Freestyle (85s). Zavier Jordan was second in Freestyle and first in Greco (95s).

For Novice, Alyssa Holm was third in Freestyle (100s). Jaedon Oliver was third in Freestyle (120s).

In Schoolboy, Temmy Politi was third in Greco (140s).

For Cadet, Jacob Politi was third in Freestyle and second in Greco (130s). Zach Amtsberg was first in Freestyle and second in Greco (145s). Tristan DeMello was third in Freestyle and second in Greco (Hvy).

In Juniors, Otto Kutsch was second in Freestyle and third in Greco (210s).

In the Open category, Joe Holcomb was a champion in both styles (145s). Bob Purcell was second in Greco (145s). Terry Matthews was also a double champion (165s).

ANNOUNCEMENT

Anderson Aquagators accepting sign-ups

Signups for the Anderson Aquagators competitive swim team will be May 1, between 5-7 p.m. at West Valley High School.

The cost is $110 for swimmers ages 5 through 8 (plus $46 for insurance), and $150 for swimmers 9-18 years old (plus $46 for insurance).

Practices are offered but swimmers are not required to attend all of them. Practices are at West Valley High School, 5:30-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday from May 5 to June 5, then weekday mornings from 7:45-9:30 a.m. and Monday through Thursday evenings from 6:15-8p.m. from June 9-Aug. 1.
