Alumni football game Friday in Conneaut

June 11--CONNEAUT -- More than 50 graduates of Conneaut and Edgewood high schools will play football Friday night to raise money for Conneaut's SPARC athletic complex.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. at the Conneaut High School football stadium, Maple and Stadium avenues.

Thirty former Spartans will take the field for Conneaut, while upwards of 25 Warriors could suit up for Edgewood, said Chris Brecht, the game's coordinator. "They've been practicing for weeks," he said Tuesday.

Nine ex-Spartan cheerleaders will inspire the fans, and kids enrolled in a junior cheer camp conducted by CHS cheerleaders will perform at half-time, Brecht said.

A Chinese auction offering some 60 items will be held. Value of the items begin at $100, Brecht said. The stadium's concession stands will also be open.

Two of the players are 48 years old, but the majority have seen fewer years, Brecht said. "A good chunk of them are in their early 30s," he said.

A company that specializes in such games, Alumni Football USA, has been hired to stage the spectacle. The company also provides the uniforms.

Proceeds will help the sports complex that will eventually include an improved football stadium and new track/field and tennis courts. Brecht has said he hopes the game raises between $15,000 and $25,000.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance at the Star Beacon, Andover Bank, Orlando'sGolden Dawn supermarket in Conneaut and Brecht's State Farm insurance office in Conneaut.

"We are excited," Brecht said.
