4 major class action settlements could put cash in your pocket — See if you qualify

Liesel Nygard, masslive.comMassLive.com

Millions of Americans may be eligible for a share of more than $3.4 billion in legal payouts following several high-profile class action settlements reached in recent months

The cases target a wide range of services, from a national health insurance provider to a major retail bank and global tech giants.

Here’s what to know:

Blue Cross Blue Shield $2.67 billion antitrust settlement

This settlement stems from claims dating back to 2013 when plaintiffs filed suit claiming that the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and its affiliated plans violated federal antitrust laws.

The plaintiffs claimed the association and its plans agreed not to compete with each other in selling health insurance and administrative services across the United States and Puerto Rico, limiting competition in the health insurance market.

Blue Cross Blue Shield denied the allegations throughout the litigation.

In an October 2020 statement, a Blue Cross Blue Shield Association spokesperson said that while it denies the allegations, it has “agreed to make some operational changes,” to “reach a settlement and put years of litigation behind us.”

The settlement was reached on Oct. 16, 2020.

Roughly 6 million claims were submitted nationwide before the filing period closed in November 2021, according to The Independent. Blue Cross Blue Shield customers could see anywhere from $300 to $333 per valid claim.

Individuals and fully insured groups covered between Feb. 7, 2008 and Oct. 16, 2020 by a Blue Cross or Blue Shield health insurance or administrative services plan were included in the settlement.

Claimants can check their status at bcbssettlement.com or by calling the settlement administrator, JND Legal Administration, at (888) 681-1142.

$425 million Capital One settlement

A U.S. District Court judge approved a $425 million settlement involving Capital One on April 20, ending a years-long legal battle over what plaintiffs described as a “bait-and-switch” scheme, according to court records.

The lawsuit claims Capital One left millions of loyal customers stuck with stagnant interest rates while offering a nearly identical product with much higher yields to newer customers.

Capital One denied the claims in the lawsuit and any allegations of wrongdoing.

The lawsuit centered on a pivot Capital One made in 2019. For years, the bank marketed its “360 Savings” account as a high-interest product designed to compete with the market’s best rates.

However, in September 2019, Capital One launched a new, nearly identical product called “360 Performance Savings.” While the names were similar, the interest rates differed.

The new “Performance” accounts offered competitive rates, climbing as high as 4.35%, while the original 360 Savings accounts were capped at roughly 0.30%, court records show.

The lawsuit claims that Capital One deceptively marketed the 360 Savings account and failed to disclose interest rate disparities to customers.

The settlement class includes current and former customers.

Eligibility likely applies to those who held a Capital One 360 Savings account at any time between Sept. 18, 2019, and June 16, 2025.

The criteria include:

Payouts vary by customer, and are calculated based on:

Eligible customers are not required to file a claim form and can expect payment automatically by or around July 21.

An option to receive an electronic payment was available, but the deadline passed on March 30. If you did not sign up for that option and your payout is $5 or more, you will receive a check in the mail.

$250 million Apple AI marketing settlement

This class-action lawsuit claimed that Apple misled customers about new Apple Intelligence and Siri features.

According to Fox News, the case is regarding the iPhone 16 launch and certain iPhone 15 devices that were marketed as ready for the tech company’s new artificial intelligence tools.

These phones were supposed to feature a smarter, more personal Siri before it was actually available.

The settlement still needs approval and Apple denies wrongdoing, the media outlet reported.

Eligible customers who file approved claims are expected to receive at least $25 per eligible device. This could rise up to $95 per device, depending on how many people file claims and other settlement factors, Fox News wrote.

U.S. buyers who purchased any iPhone 16 model, iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max between June 10, 2024 and March 29, 2025 are eligible.

Eligible customers are expected to receive a notice by email or mail with instructions on how to file through a settlement website.

Clarkson Law Firm, attorneys for the plaintiff, said it will provide more details on the settlement, including the claim deadline if approved.

$135 million Google Android settlement

Google has agreed to the class action settlement that claims it used Android devices to transfer information to Google without user permission, consuming cellular data.

Eligible consumers are those who used a mobile device running the Android operating system to access the internet through cellular data networks since Nov. 12, 2017.

Google has not admitted to any wrongdoing, Top Class reported.

Exact payment amounts vary depending on the number of participating class members and the amount each class member paid for cellular data while using Android devices.

There are approximately 100 million class members, according to Top Class. Each class member is expected to receive the same amount from the settlement fund, but exact payment amounts are not available as of May 14.

The deadline for consumers to exclude themselves is May 29, meaning they will receive no benefits from the settlement and not be paid.

The final court approval hearing is scheduled for June 23.

Further information on the deadline to file a claim will be made available if the settlement is approved in court.
