2020 Democratic hopeful Tim Ryan makes Ames stop on Saturday.

Ames Tribune (IA)

May 31--Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, will make his first trip to Ames on Saturday, and look to differentiate himself from the loaded field of 2020 Democratic presidential hopefuls.

Ryan is scheduled to participate in a meet-and-greet in the Rotary Room of the Ames Public Library from 11 a.m to noon.

Ryan, who has served nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2003, announced his bid for the Demoratic presidential nomination on April. 4. He is one of 25 Democrats vying for their party's nomination in 2020. He will be the latest to visit Ames and Story County in the lead-up to the Feb. 3, 2020, first-in-the-nation Iowa Caucuses.

The 45-year-old gained national political attention in his failed bid to unseat current Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as House Democrats' leader in 2016.

The Ohio congressman vows to run his campaign on "rebuilding the American Dream" through a measured focus on economic policy, education and health care.

Ryan championed his experience in Ohio's blue-collar district and that his understanding of "the legacy of job loss" will help him win over the working-class voters who turned to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

In addition to being a supporter of tuition-free and debt-free education, Ryan is a proponent of social-emotional in schools, a process through which children and adults use emotional understanding to maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

He's also recently spoke out against corporal punishment in schools.

In the area of healthcare, Ryan is a long-time supporter of the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid for All. He recently introduced legislation to create a Medicare buy-in option for citizens between 50 and 64 years old.

One issue that Ryan has flipped his stance on, is abortion.

Ryan maintained an anti-abortion position until 2015, when he flipped on the issue, coming to the conclusion that the "heavy hand of government must not make this decision for women and families."

Since then, Ryan has supported abortion rights and has been an outspoken critic of Ohio's 20-week abortion ban the state GOP's attempts to defund Planned Parenthood.

Environmentally, Ryan shares the views of his Democratic contemporaries that climate change is a looming threat, but does not support the Green New Deal.

In his visits to first-in-the-nation presidential primary state New Hampshire, he's advocated for a carbon tax to combat the climate crisis over the sort of large-scale investment in the public sector encapsulated in the Green New Deal.

He also wants to move the country toward a reliance on renewable energy sources, and not foreign oil.

Ryan has said that to fare better in competition with powers like China, the United States needs use national strategies on renewable energies and emerging technologies.

As Ryan tries to create some recongition in the expansive field of Democratic candidates in hopes of an appearance on the June 26-27 Democratic debate stage, early polls have him under 1 percent.
