The freedom to dream, the courage to build
As America approaches its 250th birthday, we have an opportunity to reflect on what has made our nation exceptional. While much has changed since 1776, one principle has remained constant: the freedom to pursue opportunity.

The American story has always been one of people willing to take risks in pursuit of a better future. From the merchants, farmers and tradesmen who helped build our young nation to today's entrepreneurs and small-business owners, generations of Americans have embraced uncertainty in exchange for the chance to create something of their own.
That spirit remains alive today, and I see it every day among financial professionals.
Most people don't think of insurance agents and financial advisors as entrepreneurs, but many of us are. We build businesses, invest in ourselves, serve our communities and accept that success is never guaranteed. We do it because we believe in what we're building and in the people we serve. I know that journey personally.
For me, the insurance profession is a family tradition. My father and grandfather were agents, and my mother and grandmother helped support the business behind the scenes. Growing up, I understood the value of the work, but I didn't immediately see myself following the same path.
That changed in 2013 when my father died. Suddenly, I was faced with a decision. I could walk away from the business or step forward into the unknown. Taking over the agency meant completing training, passing licensing exams, meeting aggressive goals and learning to lead while navigating personal loss. There were moments of uncertainty and more than a few sleepless nights. But there was also opportunity.
The freedom to build something meaningful often comes with risk. Every entrepreneur understands that. There are no guarantees when you start a business, take over a company or pursue a new dream. Success requires resilience, determination and the willingness to keep moving forward.
Looking back, I am grateful I chose to take that chance. What I discovered is that this profession is about far more than policies or products. It is about helping people pursue their own dreams with greater confidence. Whether helping a family protect their home, guiding a business owner through challenges or supporting a client after a loss, our work gives people the security they need to move forward.
In many ways, financial security and economic freedom have always gone hand in hand. People are more willing to start businesses, buy homes, invest in their futures and pursue opportunities when they have confidence that what matters most is protected.
That is why the work of NAIFA members matters. For 135 years, NAIFA members have helped Americans navigate uncertainty and build more secure futures. We advocate for policies that expand opportunity, educate consumers, strengthen communities, and help families make informed financial decisions. Just as importantly, we support one another. Throughout my career, I have benefited from mentors and colleagues who helped me grow professionally and see possibilities I might not have seen on my own.
As we celebrate 250 years of American independence, we should also celebrate the freedom that independence makes possible: the freedom to dream, the freedom to build and the freedom to take a chance on ourselves. Those freedoms have shaped our nation's history, and they continue to shape its future.
Every day, NAIFA members carry that tradition forward by helping families, supporting communities, building businesses and proving that the American dream is still alive for those willing to pursue it.
