JAY SCHEINER RECEIVES LEGAL & GENERAL AMERICA’S PAUL GOODMAN AWARD.

Urbana, MD, December 7, 2016 – Jay Scheiner, principal of Agent Support Group (ASG), became part of an elite group honored with the Paul Goodman award by Legal & General America.

The award was established in 1998 by William Penn Life Insurance Company of New York and is given to a person who reflects the innovative spirit and commitment to the brokerage distribution system exhibited by the late Paul Goodman, the company’s former president. Paul Goodman was known for his ability to recognize exceptional performance in the people around him; choosing each year’s honoree is Legal & General America’s way to truly honor Paul Goodman and his contribution to our industry.

Scheiner is a graduate of Tulane University, Hofstra University School of Law and The American College, where he earned his CLU. He is a member of the New York State Bar. After law school, he was recruited by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, where he served as a special agent. He entered the insurance brokerage business in 1988, training with a boutique broker-dealer and then Phoenix Mutual, where he became the leading national brokerage representative from 1989 through 1991. In 1992, just after publishing “How I turned an Orphan Lead into a $25 Million Dollar Insurance Sale,” Scheiner joined past Goodman Award recipients Sam Kaufman and Roger Yergeau at ASG, and opened its Long Island office, which he continues to run today. ASG Long Island, located in Manhasset, has been a committed and productive William Penn general agency for the past 24 years.

Scheiner and the other ASG partners, including founder and CEO Sam Kaufman, Gary Bleetstein and Mark Milbrod are members of the National Association of Life Brokerage Agencies and LifeMark. Scheiner has served on several insurance company advisory boards, working on issues such as best practices, agent education, product design and sales solutions. He has been frequently published, most recently in the November 2016 issue of Broker World with his article, “Breathe Deeply Mr. Rockefeller and Enjoy Your Sixth New Heart.”

After all these years, Scheiner still loves the thrill of helping insurance agents turn their prospects into clients. He often attends meetings between agents and their clients and legal and accounting teams, using life insurance creatively to help resolve complex issues.

Twenty years ago, after a boating accident that nearly resulting in his drowning, Scheiner made a commitment to educate boaters, regularly teaching the public boating course through the U.S. Power Squadrons. Over the past 20 years, he has taught over 600 people how to prevent fires and explosions on board, basic navigation skills, rough weather survival strategies and general boating safety. Scheiner has sailed 800 miles solo on a 19-foot boat and is a black belt in Shotokan Karate. He has climbed numerous mountains and in 2011, at age 52, summited Mount Kilimanjaro.

Jay Scheiner accepted the award from Jim Galli, Legal & General America's EVP, Business Strategy and Innovation and Patrick Bowen, SVP Distribution. Scheiner was joined at the award ceremony and reception by his ASG partners, and his wife, Carol and three daughters. They live in Manhasset.
