Wichita police on the lookout for DUIs this Friday and Saturday

Sept. 28--The Wichita Police Department will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Friday night through Saturday morning and will have extra officers around Wichita looking for impaired drivers.

At the checkpoint, officers stop drivers to check their license, proof of insurance and seat belt. Police detain motorists who are not in compliance or who are suspected to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs for further testing.

The WPD does not reveal the location of each checkpoint beforehand. Friday's checkpoint will begin at 11 p.m. and close at 3 a.m. Saturday.

WPD coordinates the checkpoints with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, Sedgwick County Emergency Management Services, DUI Victim Center of Kansas and Salvation Army.

"If you've consumed any alcohol, find a ride home," said Wichita police Sgt. Nikki Woodrow. "Please do not drink and drive."

WPD will also deploy extra officers to drive around Wichita on Friday night through Saturday morning as part of a grant-funded program called a DUI saturation patrol.

The added officers will be looking specifically for drunken or impaired drivers from 10 p.m. Friday through 3 a.m. Saturday.

"It is not worth injuring someone else, yourself, or paying all that money to get out of jail," Woodrow said. "So don't drink and drive -- find a ride home."
