Welltower, Johns Hopkins join to study better care for elderly patients

Feb. 22--Welltower Inc., the Toledo-based real estate investment trust, said today it has entered a strategic collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine to try to create improved care and wellness programs for elderly patients.

The two entities will initially focus efforts on measuring quality outcomes in assisted living and memory care, educational programs for patients and caregivers, and sharing information, best practices, and research.

"Caring for the frail elderly and people with dementia and other diseases of aging present both clinical and economic challenges for health systems," Welltower Chief Executive Officer Thomas DeRosa said in a statement. "Our collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine will advance innovation to keep this at-risk population healthy, socially engaged and out of the high cost hospital."

Johns Hopkins is in Baltimore. Welltower's portfolio includes a number of senior housing centers across the country.

Welltower also announced its fourth quarter and full year financial results today. The company said funds from operations -- the primary financial metric by which Welltower measures its success -- were down slightly in the quarter to $401.5 million, or $1.10 a share. In the fourth quarter of 2015, funds from operations were $402.4 million, or $1.13 a share.

For the year, funds from operations were up 7 percent to $1.6 billion.
