Two people charged after truck strikes hydrant in Jay

Sun Journal (Lewiston, ME)

Nov. 28--JAY -- Police said a local man and a Livermore Falls woman were charged Saturday night after witnesses reported that a vehicle struck a fire hydrant at Elm and Lavoie streets.

In a separate accident Saturday afternoon, a Jay man was injured on Borough Road.

The truck that struck a fire hydrant left the scene after 8 p.m., Detective Michael Mejia said Monday.

When Mejia and officer Stephanie Guillemette responded, Mejia found a fog light cover with a part number on it. He looked it up and found out it was from a a GMC Sierra. An alert for the truck was put out to area police departments.

Livermore Falls police found the truck at 200 Park St. in Livermore Falls. It belonged to Robert Jacques, 55, of Jay, Mejia said.

Police went to the residence but the homeowner refused to let them in to talk with Jacques and his passenger, Bruce Richard, 57, of Jay, he said. The homeowner, Deborah Warren, 54, was arrested on a Class E charge of hindering apprehension or prosecution. Livermore Falls police took her to Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.

After Warren was taken into custody, Jacques came out of the house, Mejia said. He was charged via a summons on Class E charges of failure to report an accident by quickest means and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

A conviction on a Class E charge is punishable by a maximum six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

When the hydrant owned by the Livermore Falls Water District was hit, it shifted from its fixed location.

In an accident reported at 1:42 p.m., Zachary Dewar, 25, of Jay was injured when the pickup truck he was driving on Burough Road went out of control, rolled over and landed back on its wheels on the road shoulder, Police Chief Richard Caton IV said.

Dewar's girlfriend took him by personal vehicle to a hospital.

Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier cited Dewar on violations of failing to wear a seat belt, inadequate tires, operating vehicle without a valid inspection sticker and failure to provide evidence of insurance, Caton said.

Jay Fire Rescue Department assisted at the scene. A NorthStar EMS ambulance also responded.

The 2002 Ford Ranger was towed from the scene.
