Toys for Tots collecting gifts for 2016

Herald Democrat (Sherman, TX)

Nov. 29--Toys for Tots of Grayson, Fannin and Cooke Counties is up and running for the 2016 holiday season. Jacqueline Stephens, local contact for the nonprofit said it just held a motorcycle run at Texoma Harley -- Davidson on Sunday to start it's annual campaign.

"I think there were 212 entries and we collected around 150 toys," she said of the event that kicked off the season for the organization. "It is just one of many events scheduled this year."

A look at the organization's website lists the Denison Elk's Lodge dinner starting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 3 as the next event. The cost for the event is $10 per plate or a $10 toy donation. The site also lists an event starting at noon on Dec. 12 at the Eagles Club in Denison. The event features a silent auction, BBQ dinner and T-shirt sales.

Stephens said the organization has had 4,500 families sign up so far, though applications are still being taken. She said they expect to need toys for around 6,000 children this season, which is fairly comparable number to last year.

Stephens said Toys for Tots of Grayson, Fannin and Cooke Counties takes donated toys by gender and age groups and the toys they need the most are infants and older kids, those 9 and above. The cut-off age for Toys for Tots is 12 years old.
