Tornado touched down in Haslet on Wednesday night

March 25--FORT WORTH -- An EF0 tornado touched down in Haslet on Wednesday night, destroying a storage facility and wrecking roofs and awnings, the National Weather Service reported Thursday.

With winds between 65 and 75 mph, the tornado struck at 9:06 p.m. and spent two minutes on the ground before breaking up, said Juan Hernandez, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. The damage field was 80 yards wide and 0.6 mile long.

The tornado was spawned in a front that moved through the Metroplex on Wednesday night, dropping rain and hail up to an inch in diameter. The weather service radar "showed some pretty strong indications" of rotation about 9 p.m. in Haslet, Saginaw and far north Fort Worth, but in the darkness, it couldn't be seen. The tornado wasn't confirmed until Thursday by the damage it caused.

EF0 is the lightest tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

The storms weakened as they passed through Keller and into Grapevine.

"Most of the hail was an inch or less in diameter," meteorologist Ted Ryan said. "Typically, quarter-size hail doesn't cause any damage to cars or roofs. It has to be a little bigger before you get those issues."

Parts of Denton and Collin counties were blanketed with hail Wednesday night, some the size of golf balls.

Last week's hailstorm was more damaging. The Insurance Council of Texas estimates damage from that storm will reach $600 million in auto and property claims.

Video: Hail pounds DFW late Wednesday night

A strong line of thunderstorms brought hail and high winds to the DFW Metroplex late Wednesday night.

Oncor Power spokeswoman Khristen Jones said there were no major storm-related outages.

The weather should continue to warm up Friday and Saturday, but another cold front may arrive Saturday night, bringing a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.

According to the weather service, the Easter bunny might want to wait until afternoon to deliver the goodies. Light rain is possible Sunday morning, but the afternoon should be sunny with highs in the mid-60s.

Ryan said rainfall totals at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport are normal for this time of year.
