Jan. 28--Jody L. Lomeo announced Tuesday that he plans to step down as CEO of Kaleida Health, the region's largest hospital system and its largest private employer, at the end of this year. Here's a list of highlights from Lomeo's tenure as CEO since he took the post in 2014.
June 2014: Kaleida fires two top administrators at its HighPointe on Michigan nursing home and promises a series of safety improvements after 17 workers, who also were terminated, were criminally charged with neglecting a patient under their care.
December 2014: Kaleida ends Lomeo's first year as CEO with $15 million operating income in 2014. The previous year, the company had an operating loss of $15 million. Officials credit efforts to shorten patient stays, get more patients signed up with Medicaid and boost the number of surgeries performed.
March to June 2016: Kaleida, late to the game of building ties with small, outlying hospitals, announces affiliation agreements with hospitals in Dunkirk, Irving, Lockport, Olean and Cuba.
July 2017: The system announces it is replacing Ciminelli Real Estate Corp. as the developer of the Women and Children's Hospital site with Nick Sinatra'sSinatra & Co. and Carl and William Paladino'sEllicott Development. The reuse project is winding its way through the approval and construction process.
November 2017: The $270 millionOishei Children's Hospital opens at 818 Ellicott St. The 12-floor, 185-bed facility is Kaleida's most recent significant investment on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
July 2019: Kaleida reaches tentative agreements on contracts with three unions -- Communications Workers of America 1168, 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, and International Operating Engineers Local 17.
December 2019: Kaleida puts the five-story tower of DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda up for sale. It comes 2 1/2 years after the system announced DeGraff would no longer be a full-service hospital and a year after DeGraff's refurbished emergency department opened. A nursing home and therapeutic services also remain on the site.
