Boosting breastfeeding initiation and duration rates would help change the proportions of human milk to formula and would bring substantial health care savings. Infants receiving human milk have reduced risks of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, severe lower respiratory diseases, gastrointestinal infections (diarrhea/vomiting), and more. There are also health benefits for mothers, as breastfeeding can help lower a mother's risk of high blood pressure (an epidemic in this country), type 2 diabetes, and ovarian and breast cancer. The American Association for Homecare (AAHomecare) Breastfeeding Coalition is comprised of companies that provide breast pumps and related supplies and seek to improve breastfeeding outcomes by providing breastfeeding equipment and support to expecting and new families. The Coalition is committed to increasing breastfeeding initiation and duration rates and making it easier for mothers to achieve breastfeeding goals. Collectively, they work on removing breastfeeding barriers by advocating for legislative and policy changes regionally and nationally which support expecting and new parents that choose to breastfeed their baby.
