Ten candidates apply to fill Washougal City Council vacancy

April 17--Ten applicants are looking to join the Washougal City Council, filling in for Dan Coursey, who resigned effective March 31.

Interested residents had until Friday to apply, and the current city councilors will interview the 10 applicants at the next council meeting, which is 7 p.m. Monday at Washougal City Hall, 1701 C St.

The applicants are:

--Paul Godin, who launched a write-in campaign to run for Washougal mayor in 2017 against Coursey and eventual-winner Molly Coston. Godin received 121 votes, or nearly 4 percent, in the November mayoral election.

--Adam Philbin, who also ran for office in that election, dropping his bid for Council Position No. 6 to Julie Russell, who won the seat with 54 percent of the vote.

--Janice Ferguson, a member of the Washougal Parks Board for 20 years and chairwoman of the Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance.

--Lori Rose, a volunteer with the city's salary commission who most recently worked as a financial services manager and treasurer for Dublin San Ramon Services District in Dublin, Calif.

--Ernie Suggs, director of the Camas Community Education for 35 years and a co-founder for the Washougal Schools Foundation.

--Donald Lowe Jr., a former enterprise continuous improvement manager/director for Insitu in Bingen, who volunteered with Washougal High School Parent Advisory Council and Columbia River Gorge Elementary School planning.

--Roxy Cate, who most recently worked as a sales associate at Camas Bike and Sport and previously worked as a lead pilot instructor for Horizon Air Industries in Portland.

--Karen Susac, a former public school teacher in Chicago who most recently worked as an advanced markets director for Symetra Life Insurance Company.

--Marvin Toelupe, a territory sales manager for AutoZone and volunteer with Boy Scouts of America.

--David Szyplinski, who worked as a senior business manager for 35 years.

The position will be part of the 2019 primary and general election cycle. The person appointed to Coursey's seat will serve until the 2019 election. The elected term expires at the end of 2023.
