Stamford man charged in hit-and-run accident resulting in injuries

March 10--NORWALK -- A Stamford man is facing charges for a hit-and-run accident that sent at least one person to the hospital with injuries, police said.
Norwalk police responded to the Open Door Shelter on Merritt Street around 4:20 p.m. on Friday for a medical aid call.
At the scene, police learned that an erratic driver had been involved in accident that injured at least one person.
Police were unable clarify if the driver, who was later identified as 43-year-old Jeffrey Vlash, of Stamford, struck another vehicle or a pedestrian. However, police spokesman Sgt. Rafael Fonseca did note that foot traffic is particularly heavy near the shelter at that time in the day.
As Vlash fled the scene of the accident, a Norwalk Special Services unit noticed a car fitting dispatch's descriptions with heavy front-end damage driving nearby on Martin Luther King Drive.
Though Vlash resisted the unit's initial attempt to pull him, he was eventually apprehended nearby on Fairfield Avenue. Vlash later failed a sobriety test and was placed under arrest.
Vlash was charged with reckless driving, driving while under the influence, evading responsibility for a physical injury, evading responsibility for property damage, risk of injury to a child, second-degree breach of peace and operating without insurance. He was held on a $100,000 bond, and he was given a court date of March 21.
Police would not comment on why Vlash was charged with risk of injury to a child.
