Sheriff's deputy killed in motorcycle crash

Aug. 05--WATERLOO -- The local law enforcement community is remembering a Black Hawk County sheriff's deputy who died following a motorcycle accident.

Tim Lee Petersen, 34, died of internal injuries after his motorcycle was struck by a sport utility vehicle Tuesday afternoon. He was off duty at the time.

"He was a good family man with a 5-year-old son and a hard-working individual ... He got the job done and was fair with everyone and really enjoyed his work," said Capt. Rick Abben with the sheriff's office.

Petersen had been on with the sheriff's office for about nine years and was assigned to third-shift patrol.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

The accident happened at about 4:50 p.m. in the 2500 block of Crossroads Boulevard.

Petersen, 34, was riding his 1999 Harley-Davidson east on Crossroads when the other driver in a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban pulled out from the Best Buy/BioLife driveway, and the two vehicles collided, according to the accident report.

Paramedics with Waterloo Fire Rescue took Petersen to Covenant Medical Center. He suffered several broken ribs and a lacerated liver.

The other driver, 30-year-old Shawna Flippo of Waterloo, wasn't injured. She was cited for driving while suspended, no proof of insurance and a stop sign violation.

Flippo told police she had just dropped off her husband off at BioLife and a large delivery truck was pulling up the driveway from Crossroads Boulevard and waved her across so he could pull in, according to the accident report.

She told police she didn't see the motorcycle, which was apparently behind the truck in the inside lane, before she pulled out, the report states.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
