Sen. Reed Statement on SCOTUS Rejection of Republican Lawsuit to Dismantle Affordable Care Act

WASHINGTON, June 18 -- Sen. Jack Reed, D-Rhode Island, issued the following statement on June 17, 2021:

After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 to dismiss a Trump-Republican-backed lawsuit that would have dismantled the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its key protections for millions of people with pre-existing health conditions, U.S. Senator Jack Reed issued the following statement:

"The Supreme Court's decision today means 135 million Americans with pre-existing conditions can breathe a little easier, knowing that they are no longer at risk of losing the ACA protections they rely on. This lawsuit was a shortsighted, partisan attempt to take coverage away from millions of Americans. It would have eliminated critical protections for pre-existing conditions and driven up health care costs for all consumers.

"During the past year, we have seen the critical need for the Affordable Care Act and the essential role it plays in providing Americans access to health care coverage that fits their needs.

"I will continue working with my colleagues to uphold the law and ensure that all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care coverage and protections for pre-existing conditions. Instead of ceaseless partisan attacks, I hope Republicans will work with us to strengthen the law, make health care more affordable, and improve access to reliable coverage."
