Richard Carl Vie Recognized for Contributions to the Insurance Industry

He previously served as the chairman of the board of directors with the Kemper Corporation for more than a decade. Since his retirement in 2009, Mr. Vie has held the honorary title of chairman emeritus. He previously served as the CEO from 1992 to 2006, and as president of the company from 1992 to 2002. While serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy between 1958 and 1962, he was recognized as the youngest aircraft commander in the largest squadron in the Airborne Early Warning Squadron of the Pacific. Among his other notable experiences was surviving a crash on Midway Island that resulted in the deaths of nine individuals of the 21 people involved in the crash. During this time, Mr. Vie was serving as the co-pilot of the aircraft. In an effort to maintain involvement with the United States military, Mr. Vie serves as a chairman of the U.S. Navy Memorial in the District of Columbia and as a co-chairman of the Chicago Navy Memorial at Navy Pier. He has been recognized as a chairman and founder of Military Outreach USA since 2011. Previously, Mr. Vie worked as the director of the National Museum of the American Sailor Foundation in 2017.

Early in his career, Mr. Vie joined United Insurance Company as the president, CEO and chairman of the board of directors in 1983. He went on to serve Unitrin, Inc., in a variety of roles, including as a member of the board of directors, senior vice president, CEO and president. A subsidiary of Teledyne Inc., the company is now known as the Kemper Corporation. A respected authority in his fields of focus, Mr. Vie has served on the board of directors with Valparaiso University and Concordia University. He completed formal education through the University of Missouri and Saint Louis University.
