Rep. Slaughter Announces Rochester Resident That Benefited from Affordable Care Act will Attend the President’s Address

Targeted News Service (Press Releases)

WASHINGTON, Feb. 28 -- Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y., issued the following news release:

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-25) today announced that Rochester resident Jonathan Siegel will be attending President Trump's address to Congress as her guest tomorrow night to highlight how the Affordable Care Act has expanded and improved health care for millions of Americans. Siegel recently shared how health care reform benefitted his family and helped him start his own business as part of Slaughter's campaign to hear from her constituents about the importance of this law as Republicans move forward with repealing it. Since sharing his story, Siegel has spoken at Slaughter's Affordable Care Act event and testified before Congress about this law.

"Jonathan recently told me how the Affordable Care Act provided affordable health care for his family and made it possible for him to start his own business. His story highlights just what's at stake with President Trump and Congressional Republicans' dangerous agenda. When the president looks up into the gallery during his speech, I want him to see Jonathan. He is a reminder of the millions of families all across the country whose lives and livelihoods will be devastated if Republicans repeal health reform," said Slaughter.

"I'm honored to be Congresswoman Slaughter's guest for the president's address to Congress. The Affordable Care Act has made it possible for my family to get quality health care, and even helped me start by own business. I know millions of people have a similar story to tell about how this law has helped them. The agenda of Congressional Republicans and President Trump now makes me fear for our access to health insurance. I hope my attendance at the president's address makes Republicans think twice before ripping away the coverage families like mine depend on," said Siegel.

After being laid off from Harris Interactive after a 23-year career, Siegel was able get health insurance for him and his family through the Affordable Care Act. This law also made it possible for him to become a partner in a market research firm in Rochester.

Siegel shared his story with Slaughter as part of her campaign to directly from her constituents about how the Affordable Care Act has benefitted them. He then spoke at Slaughter's recent press conference on the Affordable Care Act and testified in favor of this law during a House Oversight & Government Reform subcommittee hearing in January.

Slaughter brought the Affordable Care Act to the floor of the House of Representatives in 2009 as Chairwoman of the Rules Committee. This law has expanded and improved health care for millions of Americans in the years since, with our nation's uninsured rate now at its lowest level in more than 50 years.
