Rep. Rosen Joins House Resolution to Overturn Trump Administration’s Rule Allowing Junk Health Insurance Plans

Targeted News Service (Press Releases)

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 -- Rep. Jacky Rosen, D-Nevada, issued the following news release:

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) signed on to H.J.Res. 140, a Congressional Review Act joint resolution that would override the Trump Administration's rule to allow insurance companies to sell sub-par, junk health insurance plans that lack important consumer protections. The resolution is supported by the American Cancer Society, Planned Parenthood, Families USA, Protect Our Care, and numerous other health care groups. The full text of the resolution can be found here (https://www.congress.gov/115/bills/hjres140/BILLS-115hjres140ih.pdf).

"The latest attempt by the Trump Administration to allow insurance companies to sell junk health insurance plans is a scam that would put Nevadans at risk of having coverage that fails to protect them," said Rosen. "This reckless move could drive up healthcare costs and enable big insurance companies to discriminate against Nevadans who have pre-existing medical conditions. I will continue to advocate for policies that stabilize our healthcare markets, lower premiums and drug costs, and defend key consumer protections in the Affordable Care Act for people with pre-existing conditions."

BACKGROUND: In July, Congresswoman Rosen introduced a House Resolution that would authorize the Office of the General Counsel of the U.S. House of Representatives to intervene in a pending federal lawsuit on behalf of the House to defend the constitutionality of the ACA's coverage protections for people with pre-existing conditions. The resolution is co-sponsored by the Ranking Members of all House committees of jurisdiction.

Rosen also introduced the bicameral Capping Prescription Costs Act with Senator Elizabeth Warren. This bill takes meaningful steps to address the problem of high drug costs by placing a monthly limit on what consumers pay in out of-pocket drug costs, capping prescription drug copays at $250 per month for individuals and $500 per month for families.

Yesterday, Rosen announced the passage of two bipartisan bills she co-sponsored to lower the price of life-saving prescription drugs. The Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act (S. 2554) would guarantee that health insurance issuers and group health plans do not prohibit pharmacy providers from providing certain information to enrollees. The Know the Lowest Price Act of 2018 (S. 2553) would bar gag clauses that prohibit pharmacies from disclosing to consumers that they can, in certain cases, save money by paying out-of-pocket rather than with Medicare or Medicare Advantage. These bills will now go to the President to be signed into law.
