Rep. Rosen: CBO Estimate Reveals Harmful Implications of GOP’s American Health Care Act

WASHINGTON, March 13 -- Rep. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., issued the following statement in response to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office's report for the American Health Care Act:

"Instead of fixing what isn't working with the Affordable Care Act, the GOP proposed a plan that will not only drive up the number of uninsured Americans, but increase the costs of premiums for Americans looking to buy insurance.

"The report issued by the independent budget office estimates that insurance buyers could expect to pay 15 to 20 percent more than under current law, in addition to dropping 14 million people from their insurance coverage, with 52 million total uninsured by 2026.

"Today's announcement reaffirms the fears and concerns that I and many of my constituents have continued to raise about the GOP's health plan since it was introduced. It has become clear that Speaker Ryan and the GOP have not done their homework over the past eight years, and I do not intend to let a poorly-constructed piece of legislation have disastrous consequences on millions of Americans. I will not support legislation that creates a life-and-death situation for my constituents."

Key Findings of the CBO Report:

* 24 million Americans will lose their health coverage - including 14 million in 2018 alone.

* Under the GOP bill, 19 percent of the nonelderly population will be uninsured in 2026, compared to 10 percent in 2026 under current law.

* The bill would have the effect of slashing Medicaid by $880 billion over the next 10 years.

* Under the GOP bill, a 64-year-old with an income of $26,500 in the individual market will pay $12,900 more in their premiums each year.

* By defunding Planned Parenthood for one year, the bill would have the result of many women losing access to care, including contraceptives and other family planning services.
