Raymond Johnson case settled

Settled in the United States District Court, Central District of California, a notice of conditional settlement was formed between Plaintiff LAWANDA JOHNSON and Defendants, THE COUNTY OF RIVERSIDE. The case, which involved a Moreno Valley man by the name of Raymond Johnson, was a videotaped altercation with police outside a fastfood restaurant more than a year ago.

The case, which was settled on February 24, attraded the attention of the Riverside NAACP, which requested an outside investigation. Johnson was African American.

A settlement was reached in favor of the Johnson family represented by the lawfirm of Ivie, McNeill and Wyatt. The court, considering the Petition for Compromise of Raymond Johnson proposed by Petitioner Samuel House, granted $5,550,000.00 to the plaintiff, Lawanda Johnson and the rest of her and Raymond's family.

Employees at the Burger King on Hemlock Avenue in Moreno Valley called 911 the evening of Oct. 11, 2013 to report strange behavior by Johnson, 41, in the restaurant's drive-through.

Witnesses said Johnson was foaming at the mouth, flailing his arms and legs and throwing money and food out his car window. County sheriffs deputies responded because Moreno Valley contracts with the sheriff for police services.

Sheriff officials have said deputies asked Johnson if he needed medical help, but he didn't respond and tried to start his car, forcing deputies to act out of fear he'd drive away while intoxicated. A fourminute video posted on YouTube and recorded by a bystander showed deputies kicking and striking Johnson while he was inside his car.

Johnson, who was tasered three times and peppersprayed, was eventually handcuffed before he lost consciousness and stopped breathing. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital. Lawyers for Johnson's family said he died from multiple body blows. The county coroner's office blamed his death on heart disease, stress from the fight and PCP intoxication.

Although, a condition that was set included the purchasing of an annuity policy, which means that Raymond Johnson's family will only receive a set amount of that $5.55 million every week or month until they have exhausted the money granted to them from the court.

This annuity policy is being ordered by the court to be purchased from Berkshire Hathaway Life Insurance Company of NE, which is A++ and owned by Warren Buffet, who is the richest man in the world... signifying that the Johnson family is in good hands as they continue to recover and receive closure on the matter of Raymond Johnson's unnecessary and untimely death.
