From the background information supplied by the inventors, news correspondents obtained the following quote: "The background description provided herein is for the purpose of generally presenting the context of the disclosure. Work of the presently named inventors, to the extent it is described in this background section, as well as aspects of the description that may not otherwise qualify as prior art at the time of filing, are neither expressly nor impliedly admitted as prior art against the present disclosure.
"Many companies employ vehicle monitoring systems for a variety of purposes, including determination of insurance risk and/or premiums. These systems may monitor many vehicle attributes, such as location, speed, acceleration/deceleration, etc. The monitoring devices are integrated with the vehicle or plugged into the vehicle systems. Many of these monitoring systems require expert installation into the vehicle and further require the user to periodically withdraw the monitoring device to download the trip data."
Supplementing the background information on this patent, VerticalNews reporters also obtained the inventors' summary information for this patent: "This Summary is provided to introduce a selection of concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the Detailed Description. This Summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.
"A computer implemented method for determining yaw angle (or heading direction) estimate may comprise receiving, via a computer network, a plurality of telematics data originating from a client computing device and determining, at a processor, a first primary movement window and separating influence of gravity from the telematics data. Primary movement implies telematics device is recording vehicle movement rather than movement of device with respect to the vehicle. The method may also include minimizing, at the processor, second moment correlation between the measured vehicle's acceleration to generate a potential range of yaw angles from the plurality of telematics data from the first primary movement window. The method may further include maximizing, at the one or more processors, the count of acceleration events along a possible yaw angle of the telematics data from the first primary movement window, generating, at the one or more processors, four possible perpendicular heading directions and storing, at one or more memories, the four yaw angle estimates. The final heading direction is estimated, at one or more processors, using the telematics data from the first primary movement window, by supplementing the acceleration data with GPS and/or magnetometer and/or gyroscope data."
