NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARINGBOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS FOR SOMERSET COUNTYADOPTION OF THE SOMERSET COUNTY FLOODPLAIN

County Commissioners' Meeting Room, Room 11111916 Somerset Avenue Princess Anne, Mary land In accordance with Section 1361 of the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968, as amended, and the Flood Disaster Protection Act of 1973, as amended, to adopt and enforce floodplain management regulations which meet the requirements of 44 Code of Federal Regulations Parts 55-77, et. Seq., in order to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program and remain eligible for federally subsidized flood insurance, federal disaster relief, and Federal and State financial assistance; and Somerset County is proposing to amend its existing Flood Management Ordinance (Somerset County Ordinance #1084) to include a flood protection provision related to freeboard and to be consistent with provisions currently enforced by the Building Code. The Somerset County Commissioners will conduct a Public Hearing to consider adoption of the amendment. Members of the public are invited to attend the Public Hearing and comment on the draft Ordinance. The County Commissioners will consider all public comment prior to a decision on the draft Ordinance.

Fair Summary

The proposed Flood Management Ordinance regulates all development and new construction occurring within the Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHAs) as identified by the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) prepared by FEMA. The SFHAs are subject to a 1% or greater chance of flooding in any given year. The proposed ordinance amendment will require a Flood Protection Elevation of 1 ft above the Base Flood Elevation. Adoption of the Flood Management Ordinance allows residents and property owners to purchase Flood Insurance through the NFIP.
