New Training To Get Victorian Workers NDIS Ready

PR Newswire Policy

MELBOURNE, Vic., Australia, 26 September 2018 /PRNewswire Policy/ -- Victorians looking to work in the disability sector will soon have access to new training needed for a job in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), thanks to a new project funded by the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney today announced a $1 million boost for the NDIS Future Workforce Capability Project, led by Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) in partnership with RMIT University and the Future Social Service Institute.

The project is designed to provide high quality training and other curriculum products needed to ensure disability workers are ready for work.

Training products focus on workforce skills to assist and support NDIS clients to achieve their goals while helping disability support workers understand and navigate their important role in advocating for the rights of people with a disability.

Resources have been designed in collaboration with people who have a disability as well as their advocacy organisations to ensure training adequately meets their needs.

The project is supported by key organisations working in the disability sector including the Salvation Army, Melbourne City Mission, Carers Australia and VCOSS.

Skilled workers are in high demand across Victoria, which is why the Victorian Budget 2018/19 is investing an additional $644 million to strengthen TAFE, address skills shortages and ensure all Victorians can access the training they need to get a good job.

To make it easier to access training and pathways to an apprenticeship, the Labor Government is investing $172 million to make 30 priority TAFE courses and 20 pre-apprenticeship courses that lead to jobs that are most in demand from Victorian employers tuition free.

“This project is about making sure we have a workforce that is ready to deliver the rollout of the NDIS, with skills that put them at the forefront of service delivery across Australia.”

Quote attributable to Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley

“We're investing in the training we need to transition to the NDIS by supporting workers with skills that have been developed in partnership with people who have a disability.”

Quote attributable to Member for Northern Metropolitan Nazih Elasmar

“Only Labor will invest in collaborative training programs like this one – giving Victorians access to the skills they need for a job in our growing sectors.”

Quote attributable to VCOSS CEO Emma King

“Today's announcement will help ensure Victoria makes a smooth transition to the NDIS, and people with disability are supported and empowered to lead exceptional lives.”
