WASHINGTON Long-term care insurance (LTCI) empowers nearly 7 million Americans with the flexibility to choose when, where, and how they receive care as they age and if the need arisesthis is at home, in the community, or at a care facility. LTCI helps safeguard hard-earned retirement savings, reduces the financial and caregiving burden on families, and offers peace of mind by covering care costs that for most may become unaffordable. With an aging population and increased demand for long-term care services in the United States, LTCI will remain an indispensable resource and investment for families seeking financial protection and flexible care options for years to come.

AHIP's newly released Long-Term Care Insurance Coverage: State-to-State 2025 Report offers a comprehensive look at how LTCI supports millions of Americans across all 50 states and Washington, D.C. The report details key statistics, including enrollment numbers by state, total benefits paid, average claim amounts, estimated coverage based on average claims received, duration across care settings, as well as premium costs and policy types.

Key Findings:

Over 6.9 million Americans are covered by LTCI policies nationwide.

In 2024, LTCI providers paid out more than $16.8 billion in claims.

Since inception, total claims paid exceed $193 billion, supporting over 1.8 million individuals.

The average monthly premium for stand-alone LTCI policies is $165

LTCI helps cover costs for services such as health aides, homemaker services, adult day care, and nursing home stays, most often for multiple years. These costs can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.

LTCI helps cover the cost of care in high-cost states, like Connecticut and New Jersey, where average claim amounts are among the highest in the nation.
