Nathan Carman, Vermont man indicted on murder of mom, grandfather, arrested in Vermont [Boston Herald]

The man accused of killing both his grandfather and mother, leaving the latter’s body to go down with his boat in the high seas off of Rhode Island, has been indicted and arrested in Vermont.

Nathan Carman, 28, of Vernon, Vt., was arrested Tuesday following an eight-count indictment charging him with murdering his mother, Linda Carman, 54, on the high seas in 2016. He’s also indicted on a charge of shooting his wealthy grandfather, real estate developer John Chakalos, 84, to death in Chakalos’ Windsor, Conn., home.

Both killings were allegedly to remove the two obstacles between Carman and a huge share of his grandfather’s $44 million fortune, the indictment states. With Chakalos dead, the money would be split between his children, including Linda Carman, and with Linda Carman dead, it would be passed on to Nathan Carman.

His aunts filed a so-called “slayer” petition in 2017 seeking to have Nathan Carman declared his grandfather’s murderer, asserting in the court document he fatally shot the real estate tycoon in his bed on Dec. 20, 2013, “out of malice and greed” after the two had gone out to dinner.

Carman in 2019 opted to represent himself in a suit filed against him by National Liability and Fire Insurance Co. and the Boat Owners Association of the United States, who argued they shouldn’t have to pay Caman’s $85,000 insurance claim on the loss of his 31-foot boat, the “Chicken Pox.” Carman claimed the company would be unable to prove he scuttled the boat because its sinking “was unintentional, unexpected and entirely accidental,” the Herald reported.

The insurers won the suit in November 2019.

Carman is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday in Rutland, Vt.
