NARAL Pro-Choice America Responds to Outcome of Iowa's U.S. Senate Race

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 -- NARAL Pro-Choice America issued the following news release on Nov. 4:

Yesterday, reproductive freedom champion Theresa Greenfield lost her bid to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue released the following statement in response:

"Though we're disappointed in today's results, NARAL Pro-Choice America is proud to have backed Theresa Greenfield in her bid to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate. Over the course of this race, Greenfield recognized exactly what was at stake for women and families when it comes to reproductive freedom, and she vocally championed our fundamental rights. Make no mistake: Though this race may be over, NARAL will never stop fighting to defeat anti-choice, anti-freedom politicians like Senator Joni Ernst. We will be watching Sen. Ernst, and will continue to hold her accountable for her out-of-touch agenda."

Theresa Greenfield grew up in a hard-working rural farm family and currently serves as President of Colby Interests, one of Des Moines' oldest family-held real estate and development companies. Greenfield is a proud supporter of reproductive freedom and believes that women, not politicians, should be able to make their own decisions about their families and their futures.

In her time as Senator, Ernst has supported extreme bills to ban abortion and defund Planned Parenthood by disqualifying the organization from participating in federal healthcare programs, earning her a 0% score from NARAL in the Congressional Record on Choice. Not only did Ernst vote to illegitimately confirm Amy Barrett to the Supreme Court, she helped Trump to stack the federal judiciary with dozens of judges hostile to Roe v. Wade and determined to gut or overturn the constitutional right to abortion.

In the 2020 election cycle, NARAL Pro-Choice America ran its largest-ever electoral program designed to reach, persuade, and mobilize key voters in target states across the country who are motivated by Trump and Republicans' unyielding attacks on reproductive freedom.

Recent polling found that a strong majority (70%) of Iowa voters believe that abortion should be legal, and that the government should not prevent a woman from making that decision for herself.
