NARAL: Fact That President Will Use State of Union to Do Little More Than Throw Red Meat to His Base on Abortion Shows How Politically Weak He Is Two Years Into His Term

WASHINGTON, Feb. 5 -- NARAL Pro-Choice America issued the following statement:
As reports indicate Donald Trump will use the State of the Union to attack reproductive rights and give the extreme fringe a national platform, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement:
"Donald Trump once argued that avoiding sexually transmitted diseases was his own personal Vietnam. He has called neo-Nazis very fine people. He has separated children from the loving arms of their parents and worked to do away with health care for millions of people in desperate need. This is not a man that should be lecturing anyone about anything, much less using his largest platform to personally insert himself into the very difficult medical situations of women about which he knows absolutely nothing.
"He hasn't even bothered to educate himself about the basics of women's health and instead promotes lies perpetrated by an extreme anti-choice movement that has one goal only--to control women by ending legal abortion in this country.
"Donald Trump's use of the State of the Union address for little more than using real women's lives as political red meat to rile up his base shows how politically weak he is two years into his term. Donald Trump has always been and will always be a President who caters to a small and shrinking portion of the American public.
"It is shameful that Donald Trump has turned the State of the Union, a vital cornerstone of our democracy, into a race to the bottom of their most depraved and devastating ideologies."
