N.H. Insurance Department Residents Recover Over Million in Life Insurance Using Lost Policy Locator Tool

CONCORD, New Hampshire, Sept. 17 -- The New Hampshire Department of Insurance issued the following news release:

The New Hampshire Insurance Department (NHID) has released updated statistics for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' (NAIC) Life Policy Locator tool and the results represent a tremendous success for Granite State consumers.

Between November 2016 and July 2021, there were over 1,000 inquiries to the system from New Hampshire citizens, with over $10 million located.

"The loss of a family member is a painful experience and consumers oftentimes struggle to find their deceased loved ones' policies," said Christopher Nicolopoulos, Commissioner of the NHID. "The Lost Policy Locator Tool is a powerful resource that has helped New Hampshire residents settle important details of the estates of deceased friends and family members."

"The insurance carriers participating in the NAIC's program represent the vast majority of all policies written nationwide," said Keith Nyhan, Director of Consumer Services at the NHID. "Use of the Lost Policy Locator is open to the public, including beneficiaries and legal representatives."

The NAIC Life Policy Locator was launched in November of 2016 to help consumers locate benefits from life insurance policies and annuity contracts of a deceased family member or close relationship. There have been over 400 insurance companies participating in the program since 2019.

"We encourage people to visit the NAIC's website and utilize the Lost Policy Locator Tool to make a difficult experience as easy as possible to overcome," said DJ Bettencourt, Deputy Insurance Commissioner. "Given the high match rate we have seen, we believe there remains a significant amount of money that remains to be claimed and consumers can be assured that the Lost Policy Locator is secure, confidential and free to use."
