Municipal roundup: New Beaver receives grant for Britton Road

Nicholas Vercilla, New Castle News, Pa.New Castle News

New Beaver Borough recently received a $48,000 Lawrence County Conservation District grant to repair drainage issues on Britton Road Extension.

Council President Tom Hairhoger hopes the borough can bid the project to start work this year. The borough will apply for further state grants to resurface the road afterward.

Hairhoger said the borough is currently receiving estimates to replace the roof at the municipal building (778 Wampum-New Galilee Road), with council hopeful to advertise bids in April. Councilman Joe Gubish originally expected the cost to be around $100,000.

Solicitor Ryan Long will work on drafting ordinances to address Pennsylvania Skill Games machines and data centers in the borough. Council is no longer actively pursuing ordinances regarding an amusement tax and massage parlors, according to Hairhoger.

During its Feb. 9 meeting, council accepted the annual Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Risk Management Association insurance renewal of $19,469, agreed to bid for salt for next winter through COSTARS and set May 30 as the borough’s spring clean-up day at $1,850 per load.

BESSEMER

Richard Deal submitted his letter of resignation as fire chief on Jan. 12.

Borough council submitted letters to both North Beaver and Mahoning Townships inquiring about more fire coverage and responses to calls. No action has been taken so far.

ELLPORT

Mayor Joe MacDonald was appointed borough floodplain administrator on Monday by borough council.

Council approved the purchase of the used public information message board at $2,850 to be placed outside the municipal building.

ELLWOOD CITY

Applications for the vacant borough manager position are due by 4 p.m. Feb. 27 at the borough municipal building, 525 Lawrence Ave., PA, 16117.

Applications can also be sent to [email protected].

Borough council approved different annual events during its meeting on Monday.

These include the Memorial Day Parade and subsequent ceremony at Legion Park (10 a.m. May 25), Wander Ellwood on Lawrence Avenue (5 to 9 p.m. June 10, July 15 and Aug. 12 and 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 9), Evan’s Monumental Gifts carnival at Ewing Park (Aug. 22), Easter egg hunt at Ewing Park (11 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 28), Earth Day at Ewing Park (10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25) and Farmer’s Market on Beaver Avenue (8 a.m. to noon Saturdays from June 6 through Oct. 3).

Other actions included:

•Appointing Councilman Caleb Cragle to the borough board of health through Dec. 21, 2027.

•Purchasing five police radios and a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 truck from Wayne Township for $48,000 total. This was previously approved by Wayne Township supervisors after the township’s police department was dissolved.

•Advertising a potential ordinance that would establish 90-minute parking on the west side of Pittsburgh Circle from Glen Avenue from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

•Paying $17,733 to replace the air conditioning unit at the Community Center above the fire department, the 2026 employee hourly billing rates and a reverse subdivision of Gerald and Tina Wallace, combining two lots into one at 215 1/2 Circle Way.

NEW CASTLE

The city zoning hearing board granted the appeal of Cambridge RE Holdings to have the property at 405 E. Wallace Ave. remain a duplex with split utility meters, separate entrances with dedicated heating systems and all fixtures of a normal apartment.

Bill Cast, owner of Bill’s Bake Shoppe at 228 N. Liberty St., said though his building is for sale, the bakery is open.

PERRY

Township supervisors approved a $43,000 bid from Stephenson’s Equipment for a used 2019 JCB backhoe during its Feb. 12 meeting.

SLIPPERY ROCK

Doug Michaels was reappointed to the township planning commission for a six-year term in January.
