Most and Least Expensive States for Car Insurance

<p>By a <org>News Reporter-Staff News</org> Editor at <org>Insurance Weekly News</org> -- <location value="LS/us.mi" idsrc="xmltag.org">Michigan</location> has the nation's most expensive car insurance and <location value="LS/us.nc" idsrc="xmltag.org">North Carolina</location> has the cheapest, according to a new <a href="http://insuranceQuotes.com">insuranceQuotes.com</a> report. <location value="LS/us.mi" idsrc="xmltag.org">Michigan</location> drivers pay more than double the national average (+136%), while <location value="LS/us.nc" idsrc="xmltag.org">North Carolina</location> drivers pay 41% less than the national average.</p><p>"<location value="LS/us.mi" idsrc="xmltag.org">Michigan</location> is the only state where car insurance includes unlimited lifetime personal injury protection, so that's a major reason why car insurance is so expensive in <location value="LS/us.mi" idsrc="xmltag.org">Michigan</location>," according to <person>Laura Adams</person>, <a href="http://insuranceQuotes.com">insuranceQuotes.com</a>'s senior analyst. "Another reason is that <location value="LS/us.mi" idsrc="xmltag.org">Michigan</location> has an unusually high number of uninsured drivers, which drives up rates for people who do have car insurance."</p><p>Uninsured motorists are particularly prevalent in <location value="LU/us.mi.detrit" idsrc="xmltag.org">Detroit</location> - some estimates place the uninsured population there as high as 50% - which helps explain why <location value="LU/us.mi.wayne" idsrc="xmltag.org">Wayne County</location> (where <location value="LU/us.mi.detrit" idsrc="xmltag.org">Detroit</location> is located) is the most expensive county within the most expensive state. Car insurance costs 45% more in <location value="LU/us.mi.wayne" idsrc="xmltag.org">Wayne County</location> than the statewide average.</p><p><location value="LS/us.ri" idsrc="xmltag.org">Rhode Island</location> is the second-most expensive state, but at 45% more than the national average, it's a distant second. <location value="LU/us.ny.nyc" idsrc="xmltag.org">New York</location>, <location value="LS/us.de" idsrc="xmltag.org">Delaware</location> and <location value="LS/us.la" idsrc="xmltag.org">Louisiana</location> comprise the rest of the top five.</p><p><location value="LS/us.nc" idsrc="xmltag.org">North Carolina</location> owes its least-expensive standing to strict state regulations and a popular high-risk pool which serves as an insurer of last resort. <location value="LS/us.id" idsrc="xmltag.org">Idaho</location> has the second-cheapest car insurance, followed by <location value="LS/us.oh" idsrc="xmltag.org">Ohio</location>, <location value="LS/us.me" idsrc="xmltag.org">Maine</location>, <location value="LS/us.wi" idsrc="xmltag.org">Wisconsin</location> and <location value="LS/us.tn" idsrc="xmltag.org">Tennessee</location>.</p><p>Keywords for this news article include: <a href="http://insuranceQuotes.com">insuranceQuotes.com</a>.</p><p>Our reports deliver fact-based news of research and discoveries from around the world.
