Montgomery County: Waiver may be extended for tornado-related rebuilding fees

Dayton Daily News (OH)

Oct. 28--Owners of tornado-damaged properties in Montgomery County who are slow to receive federal aid or insurance settlements may get free permits and building inspections for another two months.

County commissioners will vote Tuesday on extending a fee waiver -- which currently ends Thursday -- to the end of the year. In July, commissioners approved a temporary waiver retroactive to May 27 for permits and inspections for demolition, repair and reconstruction of buildings damaged by Memorial Day twisters.

Though permits would still be required, affected property owners won't have to pay fees for reconstruction if the tornado-damaged building is within the same footprint. Fees will not be waived for new additions to tornado-damaged structures, according to the resolution.

After analyzing 14,000 properties in the tornadoes' paths, the Montgomery County Auditor's Office released a map in July that showed 4,434 properties had been affected to some degree, 913 destroyed or with major damage.

Residential properties accounted for 89% of those affected across the county. Nearly half of the 387 commercial properties affected were in Harrison Twp.
