Montana Democratic Party: Gianforte Called Out for Supporting ACA Repeal, While Paying False Lip Service to Medicaid Expansion

HELENA, Montana, July 14 -- The Montana Democratic Party issued the following news release:

Greg Gianforte has made his position on health care abundantly clear - he supports repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), stripping health coverage from 112,000 Montanans, and removing protections from Montanans with pre-existing conditions. Now, Gianforte is being called out for paying lip service to Medicaid expansion - which insures more than 80,000 Montanans - that would be eliminated if Gianforte gets his wish to gut the ACA.

According to MTPR, "you really can't have it both ways. You don't have Medicaid expansion in Montana without the Affordable Care Act." The interview continues, saying, "the average Montanan... even with the Affordable Care Act and the Medicaid expansion, still struggle[s] to afford health care."

But Greg Gianforte is no average Montanan. In fact, he recently disclosed $184 million in income over the last 10 years, about 3,500 times the average Montana family. So it's no surprise that Gianforte still supports repealing the Affordable Care Act and tearing up Montana's Medicaid expansion, even in the middle of a pandemic. After all, Gianforte has called Medicaid expansion "a disaster," and pledged to dismantle the ACA "piece by piece."

"Working families are relying on the ACA and Medicaid expansion now more than ever, but Greg Gianforte remains obsessed over the chance to strip health care away from thousands of Montanans when they need it most," said MDP Deputy Communications Director Matt Fidel. "Montana deserves a governor who will work to expand access to affordable health care for Montanans, not a multimillionaire seeking to tear it away."
