Mass. Sen. Warren, Dems call on top Trump aide to resign WH job if he’s named to the Fed

John L. Micek, masslive.comMassLive.com

Democrats on the U.S. Senate’s Banking Committee are calling on President Donald Trump’s top economic adviser to resign his White House post if he wins a spot on the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors.

Right now, Dr. Stephen Miran, the chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, says he’ll only take a leave of absence if he wins a spot at the nation’s central bank, but won’t give up his post.

Miran’s admission came under questioning from U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., during a confirmation hearing last week. Miran told lawmakers he’d only spend four months in the job, making an unpaid leave the appropriation option.

Late last week, Democrats on the Banking Committee, including U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., sent Miran a letter, arguing it wouldn’t be “in the best interest of the American people” for him to stay in his White House position.

“It is ludicrous to contend that you could exercise independent judgment regarding monetary policy and financial regulation. In a Tweet from 2023, you stated that no person ‘on the planet can go from highly political operative to politically neutral just because he or she gets a promotion. That’s just not how human beings work,’” they wrote.

“By your own standard, any action you take as a Fed Governor would be questioned as a self-serving ploy to satisfy the demands of the President and retain your position in the White House,” they continued.

The lawmakers asked Miran to provide them with the legal analysis that he used to justify “this dangerous arrangement and how it would preserve the independence of the Federal Reserve.

The White House did not immediately return MassLive’s request for comment.

In addition to Warren and Reed, the letter was signed by U.S. Sens. Ruben Gallego of Arizona, Raphael Warnock of Georgia, Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, Tina Smith of Minnesota, Catherine Corte Masto of Nevada, and Andy Kim of New Jersey.
