In response to Congresswoman Mia Love's opinion piece regarding the AHCA ("AHCA and the problems of the status quo," May 8), she has left out some key facts.
In states that obtain a waiver, there is no limit to the amount insurance companies can charge those with pre-existing conditions if they have a lapse in coverage. Hardworking families find themselves without coverage due to unemployment, illness or other unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, the risk pool solution is flawed. The funding is inadequate and will result in many people on long waiting lists. We have been here before.
This bill defunds Planned Parenthood, which provides a tremendous amount of health care for women, other than abortions. I, personally, have benefited from such services.
Love says victims of rape and sexual assault will not be denied coverage. What about conditions that might result from those violent crimes, such as depression, pregnancy or other diseases? Coverage won't be denied, but premiums will have no limit.
She excuses her actions, claiming unknown future improvements by the Senate, of which she has no control. Her choice was the bill in front of her. Prior to the ACA, 45,000 people died annually due to lack of coverage (2009 Harvard study). Love just voted YES on a bill that will cause the poorest and sickest of us to needlessly suffer and some to die. She should be ashamed and regretful of her actions. Her constituents should be shocked and saddened at her lack of concern for others. I know I am.
