A Rocky Mount woman is charged in Wake County District Court by the state Insurance Department with feloniously committing insurance fraud, attempting to obtain property by false pretense and altering a motor vehicle title.
Kemeya Pittman, 37, committed the offenses between Oct. 17, 2021, and March 15, the department said in a news release.
According to the department, special agents with the department's Criminal Investigations Division found Pittman tried to get $3,181 from Discovery Insurance Co. by altering the title on her 2017 Nissan Altima to make one believe she had no liens on her car. Generally, a lien is a claim or legal right against assets usually used as collateral to satisfy a debt.
Pittman was arrested July 17 and fingerprinted by the Nashville Police Department, statewide judicial system records online said.
Pittman was released on a written promise to appear before the Wake County District Court, the records said.
She is due Tuesday before the court and the information presented so far is only the insurance department's side of the case.
She will get her chance to respond as the case is processed through the judicial system.
She had listed an address in the 1200 block of Stoneridge Lane in Rocky Mount, the statewide judicial system records online said.
